LANGUAGE POLICY

Welcome to this short course on CPUT’s Language Policy. This policy supports the development of an inclusive, multilingual university environment that reflects our African identity and constitutional values. You’ll explore how CPUT promotes the use of isiXhosa, English, Afrikaans, SASL, and other languages across academic, administrative, and ceremonial domains to ensure inclusive communication and meaningful participation for all.

“By 2025, to advance CPUT towards an inclusive multilingual environment using regional languages and South African Sign Language (SASL), while promoting other national and foreign languages such as Kiswahili.” (Section 1.0)

Policy highlights:

• The policy aligns with national DHET requirements, the CHE, and CPUT’s commitment to equity and transformation.

• Language is central to decolonisation, inclusion, and access.

• It applies to all domains of university life: academic, administrative, ceremonial, and symbolic communication.
