Safety, Health and Environment Unit (SHE)
The functions, roles and services that the department offers
Development and implementation of Safety, Health and Environmental (SHE) Management System and Program in order to provide support to CPUT Management in its efforts in providing a working and learning environment that is safe and is without risk to health of staff, students, contractors and visitors.
Ensuring compliance to National legislation such as Occupational health and Safety act and the National Environmental Management Act, COID Act and any other requirement that is aimed at ensuring a safe and healthy working and learning environment.

Cape Peninsula University of Technology is committed to provide and maintain as reasonably as practicable a work and learning environment that is safe and is without risk to health of staff, students, mandatories (agents, contractors or subcontractors) and visitors as it is prescribed in the Occupational Health and Safety Act 85 of 1993 (OHS Act) and its Regulations.
The strategic goals of your faculty or department
Ensuring that CPUT SHE Policy is in place. The SHE Policy is an important document that sets out the Institution’s objectives with regards to Safety, Health and Environment.
Ensuring leadership and commitment from Senior Management as Senior Managers are ultimately responsible under the law for OHS Performance by constructing a better working and learning environment for staff and students.
Ensuring that Safety, Health and Environment (SHE) Representatives are appointed as per Section 17 & 18 of OHS Act 85 of 1993.
Coordinate the establishment of SHE Committees as per Section 19 & 20 of OHS Act 85 of 1993 and attending SHE Committee meetings as advisory members.
Provide guidance in conducting Hazard Identification and Risk Assessment (HIRA) and ensuring that HIRA Registers are kept up-to-date.
Ensuring that the Institution complies with Mandatory SHE Training requirements for those who serve in different SHE Structures of the Institution. Promote Health and Safety culture through regular awareness campaigns and induction programs.
Conducting SHE and Fire Safety Building Inspections in order to ensure that CPUT buildings comply with the regulatory requirements of OHS Act and SANS Codes.
Ensuring that the Institution is registered and in possession of a letter of Good Standing in terms of COID Act 130 of 1993.
Ensuring that all incidents and accidents are reported, recorded and investigated. Further ensuring that Section 24 incidents are reported in terms of OHS Act 85 of 1993. Incident Reporting forms as per COID Act requirements are accessible at labour.gov.za.
Ensuring that Emergency Preparedness Plans are in place and regular emergency evacuation drills are conducted.
Ensuring that contractors comply with regulatory requirements of Construction Regulation 2014 and other related SHE requirements.
Develop, Implement and Maintain SHE Procedures that will provide guidance towards an effective SHE Management System and Program.
